Requirements For The PhD Application in A UK University

The requirements of documents, qualifications, and entrance for pursuing a PhD program in the UK differ in different universities. However, the team of ELK Consulting has enlisted down the standard requirements which are a must in every UK university.

Academic Qualifications

For applying into a PhD program, a candidate must have a master’s degree qualification which is equivalent to the UK's upper second-class (2:1) level. In some courses of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, some universities may also accept a bachelor’s degree depending on the research topic. To get admission in reputed colleges, the percentage should be above 60 for merit and above 70 for distinction.

Letter Of Recommendation

Most of the universities in the UK ask for at least two letters of recommendation. It can be provided by the previous university or institute professor or the supervisor who guided you through your master’s dissertation. These letters of recommendation play a vital role in the admission process.

Language Tests

Most British people use BBC English (a grammatically correct English with posh pronunciation). This is the reason the universities in the UK accept the scores of language tests including TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or CPE for admission. The eligible score in these tests is:

  • TOEFL (online)- 100 overall, 25 writing, and 22 other sections
  • IELTS- 7 overall, 7 writing, and 6 other sections
  • PTE- 66 overall, 66 writing, and 59 other sections
  • CPE- 185 overall, 185 writing,and 169 other sections

Note: The scores may differ depending on the university and subject.

Detailed CV

Other than your educational qualifications, your professional achievements and success are also evaluated for accepting the application. Therefore, it is important to include a detailed CV mentioning the details about your achievements, success, previous or on-going research works, and particular research interests.

Research Proposal

This is not just for the universities in the UK, but anywhere in the world, the candidate must submit a research proposal for the PhD application process. This is because the PhD program is mainly based on dissertation development and without a proposal, the candidate misses a huge part of the application process.

Course Funding

Another important requirement for candidates (living in other countries) to apply for a PhD course in the UK is funding. Many universities provide scholarships and study loans. Therefore, make sure you have enough resources and fundings for your entire course duration as lack of funding can lead to the application getting rejected.
